Seaholm Waterfront

Collaboration

The Seaholm Intake facility is an iconic Art Deco design that was once the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant. Seaholm operated as a power plant until 1989. In 1996, Austin City Council authorized the decommissioning of the plant and all the associated buildings, in preparation for future adaptive re-use.

In the fall of 2016, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Austin Parks Foundation (APF), and The Trail Foundation (TTF) began discussion on steps to ensure greatest public benefit that would harness the non-profit and philanthropic sector.

This collaborative planning study, fully funded by APF and TTF and lead by internationally recognized architecture and urbanism firm Studio Gang, began in June 2017 and was completed in the summer of 2018. It provides PARD and the City of Austin with the programming and phasing model to develop a world-class public facility that will respect the historic significance of the Seaholm Intake structure.

The plan, which will relied heavily on public input via online platforms, stakeholder meetings and public open houses, serves as a roadmap for future park improvements, and the repurposing of the decommissioned Seaholm Intake structures for public use and recreation.
